Abstract
CRUTEM4 is a gridded dataset of global historical near-surface air temperature anomalies over land. This specific version is CRUTEM4.2.0.0-2013-03, available for each month from January 1850 to March 2013, on a 5 degree grid. The dataset is a collaborative product of the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia and the Met Office Hadley Centre. The CRUTEM4 dataset is updated on a monthly basis; these updates are available from the institutions listed below (see Links).

  • Where to find the data and metadata:

    • Data files

The CRUTEM4.2.0.0-2013-03 data files are available from the BADC Archive at: http://badc.nerc.ac.uk/browse/badc/cru/data/crutem/crutem4/CRUTEM4.2.0.0-2013-03

All the data files (ASCII ".dat" and netcdf ".nc") are compressed (.gz extension).
Note: The files are >2GB when unzipped, which may cause problems on the computer systems of some users.

    • File Format:

The CRUTEM4.2.0.0-2013-03 data are stored in both ASCII and NetCDF formats:

      • ASCII data

All values are stored as temperature anomalies in degrees Celsius
Missing data are set to the value given in the header. (normally -1.0e-30)
        Grids are 5x5deg monthly
The day (irrelevent here), month and year are stored at the start of each month.
Field status flags indicate whether the field is finalised ("f") or preliminary ("p").
        - Finalised fields are fixed and will not be updated under the current version number.
        - Preliminary fields may be updated in future monthly updates if additional data
        becomes available.
Data Array (72x36) Item (1,1) stores the value for the 5-deg-area centred at 177.5W and 87.5N
Item (72,36) stores the value for the 5-deg-area centred at 177.5E and 87.5S

Introduction

These pages describe the gridded CRUTEM4.2.0.0-2013-03 dataset produced by the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia and the Met Office Hadley Centre.

The gridded data are based on an archive of monthly mean temperatures provided by more than 5500 weather stations distributed around the world. Each station temperature is converted to an anomaly from the 1961-90 average temperature for that station, and each grid-box value is the mean of all the station anomalies within that grid box. As well as the mean anomaly, estimates are made of the uncertainties arising from thermometer accuracy, homogenisation, sampling grid boxes with a finite number of measurements available, large-scale biases such as urbanisation and estimation of regional averages with non-complete global measurement coverage.

The CRUTEM4.2.0.0-2013-03 are available as gzipped ASCII and netcdf files for the period January 1850 - March 2013.
