Abstract

This dataset contains summary data (global monthly mean) of the volcanic stratospheric aerosol optical depth, effective radiative forcing, instantaneous radiative forcing and rapid adjustments from 82 model simulations of volcanic eruptions that have different sulfur dioxide emissions, eruption latitudes and emission altitudes. Two ensembles were conducted for eruptions starting in January and July. Each simulation was run for 38 months post eruption in a year 2000 timeslice condition. Unified Model- United Kingdom Chemistry and Aerosols Model simulations were conducted at a global resolution of 1.875° x 1.25°.

One file is included for each eruption. Simulation IDs as specified by the Unified Model User Interface are included in each file name. Eruption details are included as global attributes.

This data were collected as part of the NERC Reconciling Volcanic Forcing and Climate Records throughout the Last Millennium (Vol-Clim) project.

Data lineage:

Data were produced by the project team and supplied for archiving at the Centre for Environmental Data Analysis (CEDA). Data were generated using the UM-UKCA model. NetCDF's were made using iris-python. Rapid adjustments were calculated using a radiative kernel based on the HadGEM3-GA7.1 climate model and processed using python.

Data Quality:
Data are as given by the data provider, no quality control has been performed by the Centre for Environmental Data Analysis (CEDA)
File Format:
Data are netCDF formatted
