Dataset
A global climatology of sting-jet cyclones: TRACK files and Sting-Jet Precursor Cut-Outs
Abstract
This dataset contains:
(1) extra-tropical cyclone tracks generated by the "TRACK" storm tracking algorithm (Hodges 1994, 1995, 1999) applied the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts ERA5 reanalysis product,
(2) cyclone 'cutouts' holding storm-centred gridded data used by the sting-jet precursor (SJP) algorithm (Martinez-Alvarado et al., 2013), and
(3) output diagnostics from the SJP algorithm.
The directories contain data for seasons October-March (Northern Hemisphere) and April-September (Southern Hemisphere) during 1979-2022. TRACK uses 850 hPa relative vorticity filtered to T42 spectral resolution to find storm candidates and only tracks lasting >=1day and tracking >=500km are considered. The 10% strongest tracks also exhibiting a warm seclusion are archived in the "storm_data" directory for each season, except for the single season October-March 2011/2012 for which all North Atlantic tracks are also included in "storm_data_alltracks" directory.
Full descriptions of each data type are given in:
(1) readme-tracks.txt
(2) readme-cutouts.txt
(3) readme-sjp-outputs.txt
