Abstract

This dataset comprises the altimetry-based river discharge (RD-alti) Climate Research Data Package (CRDP) v2.0, developed under the ESA CCI River Discharge precursor project phase 2 (RD_cci+). It provides long-term satellite-derived river discharge time series spanning at least last two decades and, at best, from 1992 to today, at designated locations. The Water Surface Elevation (WSE) time series are computed by LEGOS in collaboration with EOLA and Hydro Matters, while the river discharge time series are derived by Hydro Matters and EOLA.

The methodology, detailed in the associated ATBD (Algorithm Theoretical Baseline Document), generates two distinct RD-alti products:
1. Station-level discharge estimates: A rating curve has been established for each station using a calibration period based on in-situ discharge time series and merged Water Surface Elevation (WSE) time series. This rating curve was then applied to the entire merged WSE series to produce a continuous river discharge (RD) time series per station.
2. Mission-track-specific discharge estimates: For each station, independent rating curves were derived for individual satellite mission-tracks, using the same calibration period. These rating curves were computed between in-situ discharge time series and single-mission WSE time series, then applied to the full single-mission WSE dataset to generate river discharge estimates per mission-track and per station.

The resulting CRDP delivers two complementary river discharge products, enabling robust analysis of river discharge dynamics over two decades.
