Abstract

The carbon monoxide (CO) Climate Data Record (CDR) merged product is a new monthly Level 3 CO product developed by merging satellite data from the IASI instrument (on METOP-A, B, and C) and the MOPITT instrument (on TERRA) as part of the ESA Climate Change Initiative (CCI) Precursors for Aerosols and Ozone project.

An intermediate IASI L3 product was created averaging cloud-free Level 2 CO from the three METOP platforms (A, B and C) using the Cloud Detection Product of Whitburn et al. (2022). These data were then combined with MOPITT V9T L3 data using a weighted averaging approach. Weights were determined based on the MOPITT CO total column to prior ratio.

The merged dataset includes CO total column monthly 1°x1° resolution grids as well as uncertainty grids, for both daytime and night-time from January 2008 to December 2024. Surface altitude grids as well as data source flags grids are also provided.

The European Space Agency (ESA) Precursors for Aerosol and Ozone Climate Change Initiative (Precursors CCI) project is part of ESA's Climate Change Initiative (CCI) to produce long term datasets of Essential Climate Variables derived from global satellite data.

The version number is 1.0. Data are available in NetCDF format.
