Gridded potential evapotranspiration derived from CHESS-SCAPE: Future projections of meteorological variables at 1 km resolution for the United Kingdom 1980-2080 derived from UK Climate Projections 2018. This dataset contains two variables: daily total potential evapotranspiration (PET; kg m-2 d-1) and daily total potential evapotranspiration with interception correction (PETI; kg m-2 d-1). This dataset contains four different realisations of future climate for each of four different representative concentration pathway scenarios (RCP2.6, RCP4.5, RCP6.0 and RCP8.5), both with and without bias correction. The data are provided in gridded netCDF files at 1 km resolution aligned to the Ordnance Survey / British National Grid. There is one file for each variable for each month of the daily data. Also provided are monthly, seasonal and annual means, for which there is one file for each variable for each time. The projections use a 360-day calendar, where each month is 30 days long.

This dataset was derived from CHESS-SCAPE ( The PET was calculated using the Penman-Monteith equation parameterised for a well-watered grass surface. The PETI was calculated as PET with a correction added for interception by a grass canopy on days with non-zero precipitation. The units kg m-2 d-1 are equivalent to mm d-1. This dataset has been developed for use for hydrological modelling in the United Kingdom, it was calculated using an adaptation of the Hydro-PE method (Robinson, et al., 2023). In particular, the PETI is intended to be consistent with the Met Office Rainfall and Evaporation Calculation System (MORECS v2.0) observation-based historical potential evapotranspiration.
