Fixed concentration simulations with UKESM1 across multiple global warming levels (500 years per simulation)
Abstract
Six 500-year long climate model simulations were performed with the UKESM1-0-LL Earth System Model under constant external forcing conditions. The simulations were designed to span a range of global warming levels to explore projected climate change between 1.5 and 5°C above pre-industrial levels in a fully coupled, state-of-art Earth System Model (ESM).
The external forcings for each simulation are held at the level they were at in a parent ScenarioMIP simulation at the time the simulations are branched off. The six experiments are branched from the historical and ScenarioMIP experiments as follows (in order of mean warming over 500 years):
•r1i1p1f2 (suite-id: u-bq777): 2014 in historical
•r3i1p1f2 (suite-id: u-bw848): 2020 in SSP3-7.0
•r5i1p1f2 (suite-id: u-bz227): 2025 in SSP3-7.0
•r6i1p1f2 (suite-id: u-cd269): 2025 in SSP2-4.5
•r4i1p1f2 (suite-id: u-bw987): 2030 in SSP1-1.9
•r2i1p1f2 (suite-id: u-bu607): 2040 in SSP3-7.0
The dataset contains a subset of CF-compliant, CMORised monthly model output, with more variables and higher frequency data to be added.

The model simulations were run by Andrea Dittus on MonSooN2. Alistair Sellar helped with generating the required time-slice ancillaries. The data were post-processed by Andrea Dittus using the Met Office software CDDS. The data were CMORised using the Met Office CDDS software. Title | Fixed concentration experiments with UKESM1-0-LL |
Abstract | The external forcings for each simulation are held at the level they were at in a parent ScenarioMIP simulation at the time the simulations are branched off. In the case of GHGs, that corresponds to constant concentrations and for anthropogenic aerosols it corresponds to constant emissions. The vegetation is dynamic, but each grid cell has a prescribed crop and pasture fraction based on the conditions of their parent simulations at the point of branching-off. Solar and volcanic forcing are set to the forcings used in the pre-industrial control simulations. All simulations are branched from the first initial condition realisation of the parent ScenarioMIP experiment (r1i1p1f2 in CMIP6 nomenclature). |
