Project
ARSF - Flight BGS07/01: San Domingos Mine
Abstract
ARSF - BGS07/01 project. Location: Sao Domingos mine, South Portugal. Lead by Dra. Lidia Quintal, Instituto Nacional de Engenharia, Tecnologia e Inovacao & Claire Fleming, British Geological Survey, Keyworth (Nottingham NG12 5GG).
Portugal has a long mining history, with a clear imprint on the landscape with associated contamination patterns in soils, waters and vegetation. In the case of Volcanogenic Massive Sulphide deposits, Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) is of particular environmental concern and can be detected using HS and tools based on field spectral measurements and image processing algorithms. The S.Domingos Mine, an abandoned pyrite mine in Southern Portugal, is a striking example of AMD that has already been environmentally assessed though HS image processing during the MINEO project. The acquisition of a new hyperspectral dataset six years later using a similar sensor over this area allowed the definition of evolutionary patterns for contamination through multitemporal analysis.
