The Finish Meteorogical Institute Vaisala CT-31 ceilometer. It uses a near-infrared laser to derive the atmospheric backscatter and specifically to derive information on the cloud base height and vertical visibility height. Cloud base height estimates for up to 3 layers, as well as the depth of penetration into low-level fogs, are derived operationally by the Vaisala software.
