Abstract

Data from the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) instrument on-board the Eumetsat Polar System Metop-B satellite. The IASI is designed to measure the infrared spectrum emitted by the Earth.

IASI provides infrared soundings of the temperature profiles in the troposphere and lower stratosphere, moisture profiles in the troposphere, and some of the chemical components playing a key role in the climate monitoring, global change and atmospheric chemistry. Data were directly acquired from Eumetsat.

Introduction

The Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) consists of a Fourier Transform Spectrometer with an imaging system. It is based on a Michelson Interferometer and is designed to measure the infrared spectrum emitted by the earth.

IASI provides infrared soundings of the temperature profiles in the troposphere and lower stratosphere, moisture profiles in the troposphere, as well as some of the chemical components playing a key role in the climate monitoring, global change and atmospheric chemistry. [ref: www.esa.int]

This catalogue page refers to data flown on the Metop-B satellite, launched in 2012. Data from the IASI instrument on Metop-A is also available from the NEODC.

If you would like to access the IASI data held at NEODC, please

  1. Register as a NEODC user. If you already are a NEODC registered user, skip this step. If you have forgotten your NEODC user ID and/or password, please contact the NEODC helpdesk at neodc@rl.ac.uk.
  2. Apply for access to the IASI data. Application involves the agreement with the IASI Conditions of Use

Data can be viewed and downloaded from the IASI Metop-B archive. The Eumetsat website provides tools and documentation to help you use and understand the data (please see Links below).

Software is available, free of charge, which may assist you in viewing data from the IASI instrument:

  • BEAT: The Basic Envisat Atmospheric Toolbox (BEAT) provides a set of tools for ingesting, processing and analysing atmospheric remote sensing data. The primary instruments supported by BEAT are GOMOS, MIPAS and SCIAMACHY (flown on the Envisat satellite). However, BEAT also supports access to data from a wide range of other atmospheric instruments like IASI.

Data availability and file format

The data archived at the NEODC is received from Eumetsat and currently includes

  • IASI Level 1C data in EPS native format
  • IASI Level 2 data

The data are freely available to registered users, who are obliged to respect EUMETSAT's copyright into the archived data and products. For further information visit the EUMETSAT website.
