Dataset
A global climatology of sting-jet cyclones: TRACK files and Sting-Jet Precursor Cut-Outs
Abstract
This dataset contains (1) extra-tropical cyclone tracks generated by TRACK (Hodges 1994, 1995, 1999) applied to the ERA5 re-analysis, and (2) outputs of the sting-jet precursor algorithm (Martinez-Alvarado et al., 2013) for each cyclone. The data are split into each extended winter seasons oct-mar (NH) and apr-sep (SH) during 1979-2022 and each directory contains:
1) The tracks provided as NetCDF files, with tracks lasting >=1day and tracking >=500km considered and then filtered to retain only the 10% most intense cyclones which also exhibit a warm seclusion. The files contain latitude and longitude coordinates at 6hr intervals together with additional information, e.g. the minimum or maximum value adjacent to the track of the variable of interest and these variables have their own latitude and longitude coordinate variables.
2) A list of sting-jet precursor outputs containing XXX.
3) 15x15 degree cut-outs around each storm track containing XXX.
