Abstract
The Stratospheric Sounding Unit (SSU) is one of 3 sub-instruments of the TIROS Operational Vertical Sounder (TOVS) system flown on successive spacecraft in the TIROS-N/NOAA series of Polar Orbiting Environmental Satellites (POES) since 1978. SSU uses the technique of pressure modulation radiometry to measure radiation emitted by CO2 3 channels in the infra-red. This instrument has the highest vertical resolution in the stratosphere.
