List of data provided
---------------------------------------------------
This dataset contains the global ocean salinity estimates from Durack & Wijffels (2010) based on observations from 01-01-1950 to 12-31-2019:

- Mean salinity (for the Jan/1950 to Dec/2019 period, units in PSS).
- Salinity change (for the same period, PSS/70-years).
- Salinity change error (same period, PSS/70-years).

Notes on reproducing the figure from the provided data
---------------------------------------------------
The observational data from here (top panel) is taken from the file:
DurackandWijffels_GlobalOceanChanges_19500101-20191231__210122-205355_beta.nc. The fields of interest are salinity_mean (shown as black contours) and salinity_change (shown in colourscale). DurackandWijffels_GlobalOceanChanges_19500101-20191231__210122-205355_beta.nc is an updated file from Durack & Wijffels (2010).

The data file DurackandWijffels_GlobalOceanChanges_19500101-20191231__210122-205355_beta.nc is an intermediate file used in 3.27, please refer to the code to generate the figure using the corresponding tools (see the link to the code in the 'Related document' section README_AR6_WG1_Chap3_Figure3_27_GlobalSeaSurfaceSalinitytrends.md at main ESMValGroup/ESMValTool-AR6-OriginalCode-FinalFigures).

Abstract

Maps of multi-decadal salinity trends for the near-surface ocean. Units are Practical Salinity Scale 1978 [PSS-78] decade-1. (top) The best estimate (Section 2.3.3.2) observed trend (Durack and Wijffels, 2010–. (bottom) Simulated trend from the CMIP6 historical experiment multi-model mean (1950-–2014). Black contours show the climatological mean salinity in increments of 0.5 PSS-78 (thick lines 1 PSS-78). Further details on data sources and processing are available in the chapter data table (Table 3.SM.1).
