Dataset
Met Office Watnall station high resolution radiosonde data v2
Abstract
Met Office high resolution (2 second) radiosonde data from the Watnall station from 2000 to 2013. The data consist of vertical profiles of pressure, temperature, relative humidity, humidity mixing ratio, sonde position, wind speed and wind direction. Measurements are taken at 2 second intervals and the ascents extend to heights of approximately 20-30 km.
This updated version of this dataset contains additional information in the filenames to aid identifying changes in sonde instrumentation and ground station. Awareness of the overall sonde ascent set-up is important when adjusting these data for any identified changes in the resulting data products. The filenaming convention therefore follows the following naming convention:
sonde-type_station_launch-date-time_sonde-serial_ground-station.ext
where:
- sonde-type indicates the radiosonde model used
- station gives a lower-case site name from where the sonde was launched
- launch-date-time is the date-time in UTC of the sonde's launch
- sonde serial numbers can be cross referenced with Vaisala fact sheets to determine the specific sub-model instrumentation and thus any changes from earlier sondes of the same model
- ground-staiton details the ground software used for processing sonde raw data into resulting archived files.

Data lineage: |
Data are collected by the stations carrying out the radiosonde ascents and then transmitted back to the Met Office headquarters in Exeter. For sites in continued operation ascent files are then delivered to CEDA for ingesting into the archive approximately 1 month in arrears. Historic archive of data were provided by the Met Office as required. In both cases the files are examined with internal metadata cross-referenced with additional metadata tables to establish required metadata that have been included in filenames for the the archived files. |
Data Quality: |
Data are from operational radiosondes stations, but are not quality checked. Therefore care should be taken to ensure that ascents are not affected by icing etc.
