Abstract

This data contains initialised seasonal hindcast experiments for 1925-2010 boreal winters, with perturbed aerosol forcing. Data was produced using ECMWF's Intergrated Forecasting System (IFS), and initialised from ECMWF's CERA-20C reanalysis data.
Three types of hindcast experiment are included in this dataset:
BestAer : These runs are control hindcasts, with aerosol mass mixing ratios consistent with CMIP6 forcings.
DoubAer: These runs have aerosol mass mixing ratios at every latitude, longitude, vertical level and time step doubled relative to BestAer.
HalfAer: These runs have aerosol mass mixing ratios at every latitude, longitude, vertical level and time step doubled relative to BestAer.

Hindcasts were started every 1 November from 1925 to 2010 (inclusive) and were run out for four months from the start date, with 21 ensemble members.

This dataset includes surface variables on a 1 degree lat/lon grid.

Data downloaded from the ECMWF MARS archive at the resolution provided here and converted to netcdf (from grib). The data were reformatted to remove the 'step' dimension and index each forecast by valid time.
The data were then delivered to the Centre for Environmental Data Analysis for archiving.

Process overview

This dataset was generated by the computation detailed below.
Title

ECMWF IFS cycle 48r1, with adjustments to enable aerosol forcing perturbations

Abstract

The experiments were all performed using the ECMWF's IFS cycle 48r1, with adjustments made to enable aerosol forcings to be perturbed.
Them model uses spectral resolution of TCO199 and 137 vertical levels. The ocean model uses the Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean (NEMO) with a 1 degree horizontal resolution and 42 vertical levels.
The aerosol scheme includes sea salt, mineral dust, organic carbon, black carbon, sulfates, nitrates and ammonium. The radiation scheme is ecRad.
