SPLICE project: Canopy inputs for the DART model derived from Terrestrial Laser Scans
Abstract
This dataset contains terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) processed from eleven forest plots for use as inputs to the DART (Discrete Anisotropic Radiative Transfer) explicit radiative transfer model (Gastellu-Etcheggory et al. 2015).
The forest plots are located across the globe in different habitats, and the largest is 120 m x 120 m. The terrestrial laser scanning was completed during the leaf-on period. Full details of the eleven forest sites can be found in the documentation_dart_scenes pdf archived with the data.
TLS data were collected using the sampling protocol of Wilkes et al. (2017), using a RIEGL VZ400. A spatial estimate of leaf area index (LAI) was derived and then voxelised, with most scenes following the method of Jupp and Lovell (2007), where PAVD (Plant Area Volume Density) is derived from gap probability derived from the TLS data (Calders et al. 2014). The LAI for Wytham Woods uses a radiative transfer model, and hemispherical photography (Calders et al. 2018a,b), allowing a LAI to be estimates at a finer resolution than the collected TLS.
This data is then additionally processed using python into .txt files that can be modified and input into the DART model.

The .txt files provided are structured using the DART standard format for plots.txt files. Full details of these can found in the DART model documentation. The headers and a brief description are also given in the documentation_dart_scenes pdf archived with the data.
