Abstract

EQUIPT4Risk GEOS-Chem model simulations as part of EQUIPT4Risk WP1 (Model simulations of the concentration of pollutants over the UK with and without additional emissions associated with the new hydrocarbon sources). A nested-grid version of the GEOS-Chem chemistry transport model (v12.6.1) at 0.5°x0.625° horizontal resolution over the domain 15W-5E, 45N-65N, with additional emissions at two Shale extraction sites, was used to evaluate the impact of additional emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) on surface air quality over the UK for 2019.

This dataset includes 6 files corresponding to hourly GEOS-Chem model output of surface concentrations for either gaseous (“SpeciesConc”,) or aerosol (“AerosolMass”) species for the period 2019-01-01T00:00 to 2020-01-01T00:00.

Output from three model runs are provided:
(1) “baseline”: standard model output, replacing default CEDS anthropogenic emissions over Europe with EMEP 2017 emissions
(2) “PNR_fracking”: the same emissions as (1), with additional NOx (as NO) emissions of 29 tonnes per year at the Preston New Road (PNR, (53.787282,-2.951474)) fracking site.
(3) “BGR_fracking”: the same emissions as (1), with additional NOx (as NO) emissions of 29 tonnes per year at the British Geological Survey Kirby Misperton (BGS, (54.204185,0.892848)) fracking site.
