Met Office Counter flow Virtual Impactor (CVI)
Abstract
The Counter flow Virtual Impactor (CVI) is an inlet designed to initially separate cloud particles from the ambient atmosphere. Once captured, cloud particles are evaporated in a clean, dry airstream. Instruments downstream analyse the resulting water vapour and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), or ice nuclei (IN) as applicable. This inlet is operated on the FAAM BAe-146 aircraft.

Met Office Counter flow Virtual Impactor (CVI)
The Counter flow Virtual Impactor (CVI) is an inlet (operated on the FAAM BAe-146 aircraft) designed to initially separate cloud particles from the ambient atmosphere. Once captured, cloud particles are evaporated in a clean, dry airstream.
Instruments downstream analyse the resulting water vapour and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), or ice nuclei (IN) as applicable. Such instruments include a Condensation Particle Counter - CPC3010 (TSI), a Passive Cavity Aerosol Spectrometer Probe PCASP-x (DMT) (later SPP200), and a custom built Lyman-Alpha absorption hygrometer.
The sample may also distributed to other instruments, including an Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (TofAMS - Aerodyne), Single Particle Soot Photometer (SP2 - DMT), and Ultra High Sensitivity Aerosol Spectrometer (UHSAS - DMT) operated by University of Manchester. It is possible to supply other instrumentation, and requests to do so are welcomed, and encouraged.
